Irish Mythology Stories

I spoke to Joe, and here are simplified versions of the material he gave you out for inspiration.  Same philosophy behind the original hand outs, in that these stories are just to be used for inspiration.

What's interesting is how universal the stories are: revenge, love, family, and how easily they can be brought into the modern world.

Well done the other day, some great stories thought up on the back of our Irish Mythological creature, the xx (I still can't find the name!)

Emain Macha - A powerful Queen who'll do anything to keep her thrown from the men trying to take it away from her.

Diarmand and Grainne - Forbidden Love!  Diarmand must complete tasks to win Grainne's hand in marriage.  But at the last task, he tragically dies.  Never claiming her love.  Ironic?

King Bres - two brothers, one of them the King.  One who wants to be King.  And the fight between them.  Brotherly love versus ambition and the madness of the lust for power.

Children of Lir - a stepmother turns her stepchildren into swans to rid them from her life, only to have the act come back and haunt her.  A bad act that intially goes well and then turns sour.

Loads of stuff on youtube about Irish Myths too, well worth a look.

Follow his film

Blogs are a great way to market your film, well before you've made it.  It would seem everyone is at it, however in the case of this film maker, the results are superb.

He was the writer and director and producer and production manager of his first feature film, Girlfriend 19 and faced all the issues you'll be facing in terms of getting locations and making the whole thing work.

If you read through the blog you'll get a sense of the lovely type of community that is possible on a film shoot.  Its on the reasons I make films.  I like the company of the good people that generally end up working with us.  It is a collaborative, fun industry, if you let it be.  It's also tough, but sure you know that!

He writes some really good stuff on shot lists and the motivation for him as an artist.

Maybe your an elephant or a termite?

PM: No budget, or low budget, five worst decisions. Five best.

This is a lovely, open and honest account of an ultra-low or sometimes no budget filmmaker (same boat as you now find yourself) and the five best producing decisions he's ever made.

It's an excellent account of the behind the scenes production management activity that is required to get a no budget film of the ground.  Its also a brilliant reflection on what you can learn from your successes and what you also glean from your failures.

He used to work on the TV show Law and Order before leaving it to start out on his own.  Which was brave to begin with!

There's loads more stuff on this guys website.

Here's his six worst producing decisions.

Production/Writing: Rantings of a Creole Princess

This American lady, is producing her fourth short film.

She produces and she directs.  She hates producing!  But is very good at it.

From here on in you can read about the production process and how its going with her film.  You can also read, which I found interesting, about the writing process of the short script.

They've just done a read through and then spent a lot of sessions re-writing, re-writing, re- you get it I'm sure!

Making films with no money

I was looking through various websites for information about production management.  They are fairly thin on the ground.  But I found this, and I think its a very practical introduction with lots of simple tips for making your first no budget film.

I'm aware some of your may have made films before, so your comments about your experiences would be fantastic to have up here.  Or even start your own blog.

Keep it clean and slightly formal though...

So if you wanted to do this as a job

For some people, doing this unit will possibly be the first time they've ever managed a project.

Or it'll feel like that.

Truth is you've all managed things before, probably without thinking about it.

For example, you manged to get yourself into college.  You did the right paperwork.  Achieved the right results, applied on time, etc, and now you're here.

To go into a specific example in even more detail, you got yourself to tech on the first day.  You found out the best way to get to tech (you might have even visited once first, beforehand - what we call a reccy).  You had enough money to get the appropriate transport (that's called budgeting) and you arrived at an allotted time (which is scheduling).  If there was a problem, maybe you phoned in, or made other arrangements (this is logistics, or dealing with problems as they arise.)

There is, I'm convinced, no science to production management, other than working hard and believing that it is important to make everything on the film work the best way it can.

I like to take things personally.  I take it personally that a production goes well and worry when it doesn't.  I suppose it is personal pride, and everyone has personal pride and I think everyone wants to do well, given the right support and right reasons.

Don't worry, its not hippy talk!  In fact, its something students confess to each other every year!

However, for a more industry based definition, take a look at the industry website on what a production manager is and what they do.  The organisation is called Skillset and you, now, are part of the Northern Ireland Skillset Academy, which includes Queens and North West College.

Welcome

Hi there.

This is the blog for the production management and video editing units for the HND Moving Image course.

This year the units are teaming up with Media Project, Producer and Camera and Lighting to do the Mythical Crimes project.

On the blog you'll find lots of information relevant to production management and video editing, all of which will link into the assessment.
